more to come!

a lot of people who are travelling to new york for the summer always ask me the same question: where should i eat? i've decided to compile a list of my favorite places from the past year, all of which can be eaten at for under 10 dollars. maybe ive been reading slice and a hamburger today a bit too much, or maybe its the food network. whatever the case, i am excited to present you with:

NICK SNOW'S GUIDE TO NEW YORK CITY JUNK FOOD

Chicken and Rice Stand
----------------------------
While this place doesn't have an official name, it has a definite following. I have never not waited for food here, but at the same time, it has never not been worth it. There have been nights where me and Jason waited in excess of an hour and fifteen minutes for a delicious plate of thier simple cuisine.

Here's how it goes: you stand in line on the corner of 53rd and 6th (across from the Hilton, don't be mistaken by the other stands, you'll see the line for this one) It opens at 8 pm and stays open until 5am, so its good for a late dinner. When you get to the front of the line you won't see a menu, but the best way to order is to just say 'Chicken--" or "Lamb--" Platter.(or "Both" if, obviously, you want both.. Lamb is my personal favorite.) This will get you a little metallic dish filled with yellow rise, lettuce, tomato, and the meat of your choosing. Sometimes they wont put a pita on top, and that's when you must intereven and ask for one. Pita is vital here.

Take a step right after doing this and a guy holding a red bottle and a white bottle. He'll say soemthing that sounds "Yu Wahn Sozz??" which of course means, "you want sauce?" The white sauce is a tangy, somewhat sweet sauce and the red is an excruciatingly hot sauce. My personal perference is "Lotta white, little red." Because of the little red, I suggest buying a water from the guy who takes your money. People have underestimated the red sauce and paid grave penalties for it (shawn wines im looking at you.)

For the full Chicken and Rice experience, grab a seat on the nearby fountain and enjoy with a plastic fork.

Platter - 5.00
Water - 1 .00
-----------------
$6.00 for an extremely filling, delicious, fun meal. I wouldn't suggest going alone, because its vital to have someone to keep you company during the wait.

Location:
Corner of 53rd and 6th (Across from Hilton)

Directions:
Q train to 57th & 7th
F train to 57th

Hours:
8pm - 5am, 7 days a week

Chipshop (Park Slope)
------------------------

Don't be fooled by their terrible, terrible website; this place is delicious. I've never been to England, but according to reviews I've read, this is a pretty authentic fish & chips restaurant. If you're staying in a hotel in manhattan, this will give you a good reason to explore one of Brooklyn's best looking neighborhoods: Park Slope. The people you are travelling with might complain about the long subway ride (which isn't really that long), but trust me- an afternoon trip to the slope for some authentic fish & chips beats walking around in times square 10 times out of 10.

Located off of 5th avenue (one of the 'main drags' in park slope), Chipshop is in an area that will seriously change the idea of Brooklyn you've developed from listening to notorious BIG and watching films like Out For Justice. No, you won't get stabbed. No, there isnt anybody 'slangin' rock' on the corner. You'll be treated to great tree lined streets with historic brownstones, and a bevy of great restaurants and shops.

Now let's get to the food. Although I said all of these places you can easily eat for under 10 dollars, this one is cutting it close. I usually get the cod and chips, which comes out to a little over 10. If you want to really go for the Engrish experience, there's a fine assortment of imported sodas. The fish is battered in a sweet, corn-type batter. Its perfectly crispy and greasy, but never borders on crunchy. Be sure to ask for malt vinegar for your chips, its a perfect compliment. And for all you fish-haters, they have chicken fingers that jason swears by... but it's a fish & chips place! GET THE FISH.

My suggestion for Chipshop dining: You came all the way to brooklyn, why not visit Prospect Park? Call in your order (718 CHIPSHOP) beforehand and get it to go. Make the short uphill walk to the park (slope to the park--get it?) to enjoy a beautiful summer day--make a little picnic out of it. From chipshop, you'll just want to walk west until, you know, you hit a massive park. The nothern part of the park is my favorite, as it is the most open and sprawling. Walk quickly- there's nothing worse than cold cod (actually, the only thing worse than cold cod is being stuck behind a slow walker, so it works doubly here.)

Price
between 10 and 13 dollars per person, but worth every penny.

Location
5th ave & 6th street, brooklyn.

Directions:
R train to 9th street, walk west (uphill) one block to 5th avenue, then walk north (left) to 6th street.)

(im going to be updating this soon, i figured i'd just put these up for now.)
